| 1. | A robot may not injure a human being, nor through inaction allow a human being to come to harm, except where that would conflict with the Zeroth Law. |
| 2. | A robot must obey the orders given to it by a human being, except where that would conflict with the Zeroth or First Law. |
| 3. | A robot must protect its own existence, except where that would conflict with the Zeroth, First or Second Law. |
In his later life, Isaac Asimov wrote several books which served as links between the Robot books, the Empire books and the Foundation books, effectively creating an Asimov Universe. Other filler books have since been written, but I do not include them here as they digress from the Universe which Asimov wove.
My preferred reading order for (and grouping of) the linked books in the 'Asimov Universe' is :
| The End of Eternity | Explanation as to why the 'Asimov Universe' is the way it is |
| The Complete Robot - I, Robot + The Rest of the robots | The development of robots and their impact on human society. In these books only laws one to three are built into robots, although one robot does develop its own version of the Zeroth Law. |
| The Caves of Steel | The Elijah Bailey detective books about 'Earthers' and 'Spacers', and the stagnation of human galactic exploration. The concept of the Zeroth Law is expanded in the later of these book. |
| The Naked Sun | |
| The Robots of Dawn | |
| Robots and Empire | Events leading to the creation of the Galactic Empire |
| The stars, like dust | The Empire books, set during the height of the Galactic Empire |
| The currents of space | |
| Pebble in the sky | |
| Prelude to Foundation | Set during the decline of the Galactic Empire, these books deal with the the development of Psychohistory and background to why the Foundation is conceived. |
| Forward the Foundation | |
| Foundation | The original collection of short stories dealing with the creation and early years of The Foundation |
| Foundation and Empire | Dealing with the expansion of the Foundation towards the next Galactic Empire |
| Second Foundation | |
| Foundation's Edge | |
| Foundation and Earth |
| David's Index |
