The holiday :

Saturday 12 September 1998

We were up early at about 08:00, which was early considering the previous three night's clubbing! After finishing the packing and chilling out in the afternoon Alan and Jane came back from their afternoon out and we set off at 16:50 to pick up Kevin and then drop off Jane at Brampton.

We were all in our Ibiza Boyz T-shirts as we headed off down the M6 and we got to Burnley at 19:15. Why Burnley? Well my brother Bob had agreed to take us to the airport and then pick us up when we returned and let us sleep at his house during the morning. Cool.

We left for the airport, got checked in and took advantage of the extra legroom offered to us on the flight. This meant that we were sat right by the door onto the plane and just about everyone that got on the plane laughed at us wearing aour T-shirts! We took off a little bit late and some of us managed a bit of sleep on the plane. After we landed we were taken on an incredible bus trip around all sorts of hotels until finally getting dropped off at Planells Apartments (which were next to a statue of a screaming man) at about 07:00! The receptionist was very high! We basically just got in, dumped our stuff, did a quick video diary session and crashed out on the beds!

Sunday 13 September – It's Ibiza, Baby

Alan and Dave got up at about 11:30, had a good preliminary wander and bought some basic foodstuffs. Kevin stayed in bed. Alan and Dave had showers and decided to hit the town. After a good walk we sat down at a fountain and watched the world go by. We were constantly handed flyers, one of which was for Manumission on Monday night. We had decided we were going to do Manumission and so this was fortuitous. We were told the tickets were on sale at Bar Mambo, but could only find Café Mambo. C'est la Vie.

There was a welcome meeting at 17:00 and we clubbers were split away from the normal people. However, it quickly became apparent that our group was predominantly 18-19 year olds! We signed up for two trips – the beach party (Tuesday) and the Xmas Bash (Thursday). There was also a free bar and club crawl that evening and so after the meeting we got something to eat and then got ready for our first night on the town.

We were in the bar for 20:00 and the planned start time was 20:30. However, it was 21:05 when we left and there were several groups that merged together. Alan and Dave were talking with two Cardiff girls (Zoë and Sara) and Kevin was talking to two from Bristol (Becky and Leanne). It was a funny tour, in every bar we got free shots with our drinks! We finally ended up in one of the free clubs (Ray2) and lost Kevin in there. Alan and Dave had some dances and called it a day at about 03:00. On the way back Alan and Dave bought Big Ass Sandwiches from a small supermarket called Wips on the main front. These were entire French sticks, about 24 inches long! Dave ate half of his and left the rest for breakfast, but Alan ate all but 3 inches of his!

Monday 14 September – We're on a Manumission from God

We were up again at about 11:00 and hit the town again. We found Bar M (the Manumission Bar) and bought our tickets for tonight. We then relaxed in the bar for most of the afternoon and became infatuated with the two barmaids !-)

After getting back to the apartment we got ready and hit Bar Street for the early part of the evening. We started with a meal at one of the many restaurants along the front and then threw in an assortment of bars and clubs. At about 23:45 we got a taxi out to Privilege, which hosts Manumission on a Monday. It was incredible in there – as big as an aircraft hanger it can hold 10,000 people and has shops, restaurants and a pool! The only downer is the prices. 7000 pesetas for entry, 800 pesetas for a small bottle of water!

We hadn't been in too long when we started talking to two teacher trainees from Lancaster University called Vicky and Joanne. Vicky was from Wigton, near Carlisle, and knew a friend of Alan's! Joanne was from near Birmingham.

The Boyz in Manumission - 2. Who the hell is that girl??

Dave had his first real click on the dance floor with a Belgian woman called Krystal who invited him to go with her to Space after Manumission. Unfortunately there was the beach party next day and so he declined. Alan clicked with a woman but was so drunk he can't remember anything! Her friend was not interested in Dave and took her away.

We danced until 05:00 and then got a taxi back to San Antonio so Kevin could eat something and then went back to the hotel to leave us enough time for sleep before the beach party on Tuesday afternoon.

Tuesday 15 September – Hit the road, Jack

We dragged ourselves out of bed at about 11:00, wolfed down a full English breakfast in the bar and then waited for the off. One of the female reps wobbled her tits in Dave's face but the only reaction he could muster was "they're not very big, are they?" She went and wobbled them at someone else. On the way down to the boat we talked with Becky and Leanne and had livened up by the time we got there. We were hanging about waiting to get on the boat when Alan went up to Dave and said "I can't see" and then started to fall over. Dave grabbed him, lowered him to the ground and checked for a pulse. There was a pulse and so picked him up and got him sat on a bench, by which time he was coming round. It transpired that he had had similar attacks in the UK and so we took him to the Medical Centre. After a short talk with Kevin and the rep, Dave offered to stay with Alan for the day. The doctor diagnosed very low blood pressure, unrelated to drinking and clubbing. While Alan was getting treated, Dave discovered the chat up potential of the waiting room of the Medical Centre! After treatment we went and got a prescription filled out and the ambulance gave us a lift back to the apartment where Alan rested and Dave wrote postcards. By late afternoon Alan was OK again and so we went down to Bar M and sat in the shade and drank soft drinks.

When we got back, Kevin was back as well and so we decided to repeat the Sunday night out, with Alan cutting down the alcohol consumption a bit. We started with a meal at one of the restaurants on the Harbour front just next to Bar Street and then worked our way up Bar Street, having our photo taken with each drink! When we got to the top we were sat with our first drink when three women came in and so we asked one to take our photo. Then Kevin spotted a street hawker selling laser pens and dashed out after him to buy one. Dave commented to the women that "that must be the first time he's had a customer chasing him" they laughed and started talking. When Kevin got back he joined in and it turned out these women were in the same apartment block as us!

We all decided move on and when we got to a Club we asked if they wanted to go in and they said yes, but would have to go back and get changed first, so we agreed to meet them in there. After some dancing, we all walked back to the apartment where we had coffee and tea and decided to spend the next day together at the Hippie Market and the beach. We then walked the lasses down one flight of stairs to their apartment!

Wednesday 16 September – Life's a beach

We got up and had breakfast and then met the lasses for the bus ride to the Hippie Market. It took three buses and about 2 hours to get there! When we got there it had been decided that Yvette and Dave were the only ones who wanted to see the Market and the others were going to stay on the beach! After walking around the Market Dave and Yvette sat in a bar and had a drink to cool down before heading off to the beach to rejoin the others. The rest of the afternoon was sunbathing punctuated by swimming and water-Frisbee. We were getting hungry by about 18:00 and so went for something to eat and then to get back quicker we got taxis back to San Antonio. We then went out around the bars and clubs again and amongst other things played table soccer and Kevin bought Marilyn a little finger controlled box that was way too much like a voodoo doll for Dave and Yvette's liking! Marilyn called him Jimmy.

Thursday 17 September – Getting Cheeky

Kevin spent the day in bed and Alan and Dave went wandering, chilling out and drinking at Bar M. Dave was well wrecked having drunk way too much the night before and vowed to stay off drink that day! This promise lasted until about 14:00 when Alan forced him to have a cocktail! We all met up back at the apartment at about 17:00 and decided that, given Alan's medical condition, a night on the beach would not be a good idea and that maybe we should just do Bar Street again. This expanded into a decision to invite the lasses along with us. Dave wrote out a nice invitation on a postcard and went to put it under their door, but knocked first. They were in, but they had been asleep! Anyway, he gave them the card and told them of the offer and left them to decide. A little while later there was a knock at the door and we found a note had been pushed under saying that they had agreed to spend the evening with us. After meeting the lasses we went for a meal and then onto the Rock Bar where we spent most of the night.

Friday 18 September – Noodles of fun

Dave went and got one of the Big Ass Sandwiches and some water and we shared it. Kevin slept all afternoon again and Dave and Alan spent it down at Bar M. That night we had a Chinese meal afterwards moved on to the Rock Bar.

Saturday 19 September – The long goodbye Saturday

Up fairly early, we finished packing, moved our bags over to a temporary hotel and then Alan and Kevin went wandering. Dave relaxed in the room. In the evening we had a Tex-Mex meal at a restaurant near the hotel and then awaited the bus to the airport.

When we boarded the plane it was a mixture of sleep and coma!

Sunday 20 September – The day of the living dead

Bob picked us up from the airport and we crashed for the morning at his house, sleeping from 08:00 to about 13:15. We then drove back to Carlisle and spent the rest of Sunday wandering around like Zombies!
