As a little precursor to the holiday, Gareth and David were invited to Alan and his girlfriend Jayne's house for some Chili. After the excellent meal we headed out to Jackson's for the evening for one last taste of good music before Ibiza !-) Dave bumped into Durdar Debbie, a lass he once shared a house with near Durdar and since Gareth, Alan and Jayne had not seen her before, they thought he was getting some practice in before the holiday! On the way home we all got burger and chips. Gareth crashed at Dave's for the night and after a long conversation on the 'phone between Dave and a mate, Dave got to bed at 03:30 !
Gareth was up first, since he was getting collected to come back later with his cases. Dave got up at about 09:00 and did some last minute shopping and then got packed up. After lunch Dave settled down to listen to the CUFC match on the radio and they were leading 1-0 at half-time. However, he fell asleep and didn't wake up until full-time and was therefore very confused to hear that Carlisle had lost 4-1 !!!!
Everyone was ready to go by 19:00 and so we loaded up Dave's car and set off. It was an emotional farewell at the airport for Alan and Jayne, then it was through and onto the plane and off to Ibiza...... except that the baggage handlers hadn't put the luggage on and we had to wait an hour before we could take off!
We arrived at Planells at 08:00 and had been told that the welcome meeting was at 10:00 and so just grabbed some sleep. We got to the welcome meeting at 10:15 only to discover that it was on Monday! So we went for a walk, bought the Manumission Closing Party Tickets and started drinking !-)
We had our first pasta/rice meal of the holiday. We had brought a load of those dehydrated meals to eat in the evening to keep the holiday cost down a bit. Tonight's was Pasta with a tin of hotdogs !-)
Alan was "Roy Keen" to get out, but it started to rain just as we were going out. Great. But it didn't last too long, although sat outside the Welsh pub Delilah's it was still a bit wild, though that was just the weather. Bar Street was very quiet. Gareth bought a watch from one of the street peddlars, after forcing the price down, and then a fight broke out at the top of Bar Street! We continued to consume alcohol and then played pool at the Golden Gate, which is run by Anna who, as the fortnight progressed, it became clear is absolutely Loony Tunes! She kept whacking Alan on the head with a toy hammer!
We ended up in Play 2 again, pretty much as in 1998, and left at about 03:00. Gareth went on to Kaos on his own for a while and Alan and Dave bought baguettes on the way home !-) After we got back, Alan was still peckish and went out again and bought a big bag of crisps!
We all got up at about 11:00, our retinas instantly damaged by the impossibly bright sun! We went for a wander around. For Alan and Dave (who were there in 1998) it was like they had already been there a week! We had breakfast at about 14:30, then wrote some postcards, chilled out on the balcony, ate corned beef and rice, drank and then followed a large group (with many women in it) to the harbour, only to see them get on a boat !-(
After a quick drink on Bar Street we got a taxi out to Manumission (which only took 5 minutes this year, but seemed to be 30 minutes in 1998 !-) and joined the queue. We got talking to some Scottish lasses in the queue before we got in, danced with some Antipodeans called Melinda and Joanne and then Dave lost Alan and Gareth.
Dave spent the rest of the Manumission evening with Beth, Sarah and Sam (Southampton students) who were flying back the next day, and then got a taxi back to San Antonio with two other lasses, got a baguette and then got to bed at about 06:30
Alan and Gareth danced the night away, with Gareth trying to chat up a French woman. He wished he had had French lessons, or perhaps he was hoping he was going to get some French Lessons...... Alan and Gareth got back at about 08:15, but then......
Gareth decided to go for a wander when he got back from Manumission and when Dave got up at 12:00, he still wasn't back. Dave went and got breakfast, read for a bit and chatted with the neighbours, Kieran and Gavin. Alan got up at 13:00, and we were about to go looking for Gareth when Gavin found him sat on the stairs, asleep! When we tried to move him, he swung at us and did a very good impression of Father Jack! We got him to bed (15:00) and left him there. He eventually rose at 21:00, after Dave and Alan had eaten. Dave and Alan had Gareth convinced that he had been out for 36 hours! Gareth survived on Bar Street with us for a couple of hours. We played pool for a while and then Gareth went back to get some more sleep.
Dave and Alan went on to Play 2 until about 02:00 and then got some baguettes on the walk home.
We were all up at about 12:00 and headed out to the beach bars - Kiwi Bar and Bar M. We saw some of the lasses from Play 2 the previous night (the Sisters of No Mercy) and they were wandering around topless on the beach. We then wandered around to Savannah bar, played pool and got some of the old flyer posters free. We then got some shopping and went back to the apartment and chilled out on the balcony, reading.
We tried to watch the soccer at the Orosol bar, but they didn't have it on, so we got changed, had tea and hit Bar Street. We discovered that the prop at King's (Tracey) was from Kendal and we sat for a while talking to her and two Scots, lamenting the southern English and Londoners in particular, unaware that there were two Essex girls sat next to us !-) In particular, Dave described London as "a hellhole I wouldn't like to live in". We then went into Play 2 and saw the Sisters of No Mercy. We all had our little wanders and dances and Dave and Gareth tried Trops and Night Life, but both had less than 20 people in! We finished the night in the Golden Gate again and got baguette sandwiches on the walk home.
We got up at 11:00, wandered around the shops and bars and had a plate of chips between us in the Kiwi Bar. The two girls we had seen over the last few nights were in there. We also found the Internet Cafe but were amazed to discover that it was shut at weekends! We did discover our first decent supermarket and got some basic food items there. We used this supermarket for the rest of the holiday!
We got back to the apartment at 19:00, did some more postcards, had tea at 21:30 and got ready. We were out again at 22:30 onto Bar Street and Play 2. Dave came across a drunk lass and walked her home with her mate and met Alan and Gareth just as they were coming out of Play 2.
We went to King's and the Golden Gate and then into a pub on a sidestreet. The prop promised 3 drinks and 3 cocktails for 1000 pesetas, but the barman tried to charge more, so we put our drinks down and walked out! We got sausage and chips and were back at the apartments for 03:00
Dave was up at 13:00, Alan and Gareth at 14:30. we went for a wander and thought about frisbeeing, but it was too windy. Back at the apartment we dropped an icecube onto the driver's seat of a jeep from our 4th floor balcony. It was funny seeing the driver squirm when he got into the jeep! We had a weird tin of gunk with rice, but it tasted OK, and were out at 23:00. We started in Ground Zero, then Play 2, then Ground Zero again. We got a lass (Fiona) to take our photo and then Dave was slow finishing his next pint, so Alan and Gareth went back to Play 2 without him. While Dave was finishing his drink, Fiona came over to talk and bought him a drink. They got talking and she asked if he wanted to go on to a club with her and her mate, but instead he walked them back to their hotel and sat chatting with Fiona on the balcony while Julie went to sleep.
During their chat they heard a girl in the pool, fully clothed, crying. She had had a fight with her mate and was very upset. Dave and Fiona calmed her down, got her dried and back to her apartment and then carried on with their chat. By the time the sun came up, it was easier for Dave to crash on their spare bed and walk back in the afternoon, at about 13:00!
Alan and Gareth were up at about 11:00 and went for a wander. They spotted Dave wandering back and said he looked like a dirty old man, he was that tired looking !-) They then went to play pool at Bar M while Dave slept all afternoon. There were some nice Scouser lasses and Gareth wanted to take a picture, but Alan forgot he had the camera with him! After his sleep, Dave was discovered relaxing after a shower.
After getting ready, we went for a Chinese meal, then on to play pool, Ground Zero and Play 2. Dave gave up at 01:00 and went back, while Alan and Gareth pressed on and got back at 05:30.
Dave got up at 10:30, went for a wander and got a paper, only to discover Carlisle United got creamed by Halifax Town on the Saturday !-( He got some shopping, went back to the apartments and read a book until Alan and Gareth got up. We went to Golden Gate to watch Wimbledon v Spurs (1-1). Got talking with Dec, a Leeds and Halifax fan, and we made arrangements for a drinking session with his mate Steve later.
After a quick meal, we were out at 23:00 to play pool. Fiona and Julie tracked Dave down in Golden Gate and the three of them sat and chatted while Gareth and Alan played pool. After Fiona and Julie left to catch their plane, we moved on to Ground Zero where we met Dec and Steve. While we were there Dec took a fancy to this gorgeous blonde, but wouldn't go and talk to her and so Gareth and Dave carried him over on his stool! She loved it, but Dec was lost for words! Anyway, we moved on to Play 2 after Ground Zero closed.....
We all got up at about 11:30, did the beach bars and went food shopping. We read for the rest of the afternoon, got some quick sarnies and went and watched the Liverpool v Everton (0-1) match. Anna kept setting off fire crackers while we were watching - one nearly burnt the hair on Dave's leg !-)
After getting changed and freshened up, we headed out to King's and bumped into Beverley, Heather and Sarah from Carlisle. We moved on down to Ground Zero, listened to Dec's DJ set and then Dave and Alan went on to Play 2 and Gareth stayed with Beverley.
After Play 2, Dave and Alan got chips and chatted with the family from Walsall who had moved into the apartment next to us. We all got to bed at about 04:00 - 05:00.
We were all up at 11:00, but Gareth decided to go back to bed again (the youngsters' can't take the pace ;-) so Dave and Alan headed for Bar M and then did some shopping. Steve and Dec came round for some pasta and then we all headed for Capone's, King's and Golden Gate. We got Anna with party poppers as revenge for previous nights !-) After Ground Zero we went to Es Paradis with Beverley, Heather and Sarah for the Water Party. Alan and Steve danced most of the night with some Polish lass, the women disappeared and the other three of us enjoyed ourselves by making fun of all the pretentious people there :-)
The highlights of the night were Dave getting Gareth to ask a German guy for a dance in German and Alan asking a lass if she would dance with Gareth after Gareth bet Alan to ask her to dance himself. When Alan said she'd said no, Gareth celebrated, little knowing that she'd said no to Gareth, not Alan!
When the Water Party started, Dave looked after everyone's stuff, since he'd done something similar before, but he still got a bit wet because the barmaid had a water gun! Also, he kept getting hugged by wet women! We all eventually got home at about 07:00!
We all got up at about 13:30, when the cleaners arrived !-)
We went and played frisbee in the sea, but Dave cut his toes on something in the water after an hour or so and brought that to an end! We had lunch in the Kiwi Bar and then chilled for the rest of the afternoon in the apartment. Dec popped around and then all 5 of us went to Golden Gate to watch the European soccer (Man Utd 2-1 and Arsenal 1-1). After getting changed, we hit Ground Zero where we went Big Yorkshire Andy and his mate, and then we all went mad on the dance floor for the rest of the night :-)
Dave called it a day at 05:00 (sore toes) but the others continued until 6 am
Dave was up at 13:30, Gareth at 15:40 and Alan at 16:00, although Alan immediately went back to bed! Dec came round and he and Gareth went hunting for a pub with the Leeds game on, but had no luck and we had to settle for West Ham in the Golden Gate. Alan stayed in and joined us later in Ground Zero. We saw an incredibly drunk woman and a different woman that came in on her own and hooked up with a group of lads...... Hmmm......
We got talking with this huge guy called Curtis and his friend Carol and at the end of the evening Ian (the owner) gave us all a round of shots !-)
We moved on to Play 2, where Gareth, Dec and Dave started to get silly! We ended up in the Simple Arts club which, for a change, was playing some really good reggae and ragga. Alan walked Carol home and Dave, Dec and Gareth sat on the Dock eating burgers and kebabs. Dave had entertained/bemused people in the queue by using his fingers as a pinhole camera to focus on the menu.
We all got home at about 07:00!
We managed to crawl out of our beds at about 14:30 and Alan and Gareth went shopping. We watched the rugby (Wales 23-18 Argentina) and then went to meet Heather, Beverley and Sarah at Cafe Del Mar.
After a rice meal, we hit Bar Street at about 22:00 and met Prozac Woman and Bottomless Bra Woman. Trust us, least said......
After a few games of pool we ended up in Ground Zero. Surprise, surprise.... Alan went back to go to bed at about 23:30, Dave at about 00:30 and Gareth stayed talking with Beverley.
Dave got up at 08:00 and took some photos of the sunrise - the second he had seen this holiday ;-) He went and got some last minute shopping and when Alan and Gareth were awoken, we all packed up and moved over to the hotel room in Orosol that we had booked for the rest of the day. We basically wandered around for the day and then Dave and Gareth went to watch the sunset at Savannah Bar. Alan was getting some more sleep in the hotel room and then we all just awaited the bus ride to the airport.
At the baggage check-in Dave "had words" with a guy who tried to push in front of him!!! Once we were through, we just sat and waited for the plane, which left on time at 04:40. We managed to sleep, no problem!!!!
Jayne met us at the airport and we all munched in the car on the food she brought and then slept for the rest of the trip home.
And that was Ibiza 1999, Babies !-)
Ground Zero is an oasis in the musical desert that is Ibizan Dance / Trance. Featuring good, solid Indie and Rock we were treated to the DJ telling one lass that requested "Phats and Small" to go to one of the dozens of other clubs that play them !-)
The staff are good fun and friendly and Ian (the owner) is a delight to talk with. Strongly recommended!!!!!!! To see how much so, read the awards section below!
