OK, they had a full team of eight. We had six. Of our six, two started with injuries and a third was brought down three times and as a result was hobbling for most of the game. On those terms, a 2-1 defeat was an impressive performance, but it does not adequately convey what a good performance this was.
The talking was succinct and meaningful, with everyone playing 'the simple ball' and us holding possession for large parts of the game. When we did release someone on a run (or hobble) it was a threatening one which had Corkers' worried.
We stood up to their men and forced them away from goal on many occasions, rather than lunging in.
Now for the self-criticism.
- I spilled a shot I should have held which they then put away for their first, and for this I deeply apologise - it was a shocking lapse of concentration.
- I was unsighted for their second, but it was NZer Matt, and I know he likes to shoot when the 'keeper is unsighted, so I was trying to be ready for it and see the ball, but couldn't.
- A couple of my throwouts were poor again.
Well played to everyone - proud of you all!!
