JIMMY Glass may not become one of Carlisle United 5 greatest names, yet his name will long be remembered by fans of the club known as the Cumbrians. Goalkeeper Glass is the person who ensured Carlisle remained in England's Division 3, something that seemed extremely remote for 95 minutes.
Carlisle needed to beat Plymouth to stay in Division 3 and avoid going to non-league soccer for the first time In 71 years. When 18-year-old Lee Phillips put Plymouth ahead in the 49th minute things looked bleak until Carlisle captain David Brightwell equalised ill the 62 nd minute
The game then went into stoppage time, five minutes in fact, still with the scores locked at 1-1 which meant Carlisle was going down. With seconds remaining, Carlisle's Graham Anthony curved a corner into the box where his teammate Scott Dobie had a header parried by Plymouth keeper James Dungey. The loose bail found its way to Glass, who had joined his mates in the box, and he took his chance with the precision of Dwight Yorke.
And on-loan Glasswas only playing because he had been given special dispensation to do so by the Football League.
