Carlisle United retained their 71-year-old Football League status in the most sensational fashion yesterday. 'Keeper Jimmy Glass, signed on loan after deadline day, ran the length of Brunton Park to score a dramtic goal in the fifth minute of stoppage time to defeat Plymouth.
The Cumbrians' 2-1 win, coupled with Scarborough's 1-1 draw at home to Peterborough, condemned the Yorkshire outfit to non-league football.
Carlisle were just seconds away from being condemned to the Conference when, in a last ditch attempt at survival, Glass joined his team-mates at a corner. Anthony swung the ball into the box and, after a Dobie header was parried by the Plymouth 'keeper, there was Glass to stab home the stunning winner. Afterwards the elated 'keeper said "The fans behind the goal were keeping me in touch with the score at Scarborough. I knew we had to win the game so when we won a corner in the last minute I just went up. The ball dropped to my foot and I just put it into the net. I was then swamped by about 3000 Calisle fans!"
Chairman Michael Knighton was subjected to a torrent of abuse shortly after the start of the match. He has come under fire for failing to invest in the team, despite the club announcing a £1.4m profit last week. Knighton has admitted he will sell Carlisle if a buyer can be found.
Carlisle's Director of Coaching Nigel Pearson made an emotional speech to the fans after the match. He thanked the fans, the players and the staff for their support.
