September 1997

Well, there isn't too much I can say about the start to our Division 2 campaign. At least, not without using a lot of swear words, which I frown upon. On the subject of swearing, Mick Mitchell mentioned in his programme column that Bristol Rovers had introduced a No Swearing section. Now, at first thought, this seems like a good idea for families, particularly considering the limited vocabulary of some Fans. However, as Mick goes on to point out, who decides what is swearing? For example, I'm an atheist, so should I be chastised for blaspheming? "That goal was good enough for Jehovah himself to have scored it!"

Getting back to the subject of our start to this season, some will say that we have had players out through injury and suspension; fair enough, until you examine the situation. For the Northampton game we had what could be described as a full-strength defence. What happened? Two defensive errors led to two goals and we lost again. Is this starting to sound like our last Division 2 campaign? I think so. All is not yet lost, however. We have only played 4 games and we are only 5 points off mid-table. So, no need to panic ...... yet.

We have been entertained by some interesting chants from visitors this season, and two which stick with me are:

"You'll never get a job!" Watford Did they think they were in Liverpool?
"You're Jocks and you know you are" Northampton Yyyyeeeesss.

However, it does bring me back to an old gripe of mine. Have you noticed how 400 - 1000 Carlisle fans away from home create more noise than 5000 Carlisle fans at home?

Anyway, soapbox mode off.
