July 1998

Well, June was a bit of a non-event soccer wise - oh, unless you count the World Cup, of course! Scotland didn't fair too well and went out in the first round, but England got through to the knock-out phase to face Argentina. Some saw this as the chance for revenge following Diego Maradonna's "Hand of God" goal. Unfortunately, some strange refereeing decisions (which just about balanced out) and a stupid David Beckham resulted in England on the backfoot for most of the second-half, extra-time and then out of the torunament via a penalty shoot-out. Again. I have better words to describe my feelings, but I don't like to swear on the web.

I watched the Romania game in a Dundee's Bar in Montreal along with my brother Bob and 6 other English people, 2 Romanians and assorted neutrals. What a game to lose! This issue is naturally quite short and will be followed by the usual delayed August issue which will be published prior to the opening game of the 1998/99 season. The August issue will contain reviews of the pre-season games, player movements and an updated biography section.

There have been no changes to the main sections this month.
