November 1998

Halloween - the night of evil. Especially all those bloody kids who come knocking on the door asking for money. Then it is Bonfire Night and then the Christmas Carol Singers. Man.........

Anyway, on to the football. Another reasonably successful month on the pitch saw us rise through the Division following a sequence of wins and draws. However, this only marginally reduced the criticism of Knighton. This month he announced a plan for a new club financing (and fan empowerment) scheme:

From The Cumberland News

Carlisle United Chairman, Michael Knighton wants to turn the club into a fans co-operative. Between 500 and 600 supporters are being invited to pay £4500 EACH for a "platinum bond" giving them the powers to hire and fire managers, players or chief executive, or spend money on the ground - in effect, complete control of the club.

Bond holders could not expect a cash return, but would get 25% off season tickets, and discounts at the club shop for five years. Every 3 years, the group would elect 10 people to form a management committee to run the club, replacing the board of directors. Brunton Park and the clubs other assets would continue to be owned by Carlisle United football club limited.

Knighton has apparently made arrangements to offer fans loans, repaying £148 per month. It's similar to the scheme he tried a couple of years ago, offering fans a 51% stake in the club, for an investment of £1850, or £7 per week.

If interested, write to Knighton at Brunton Park.

In a moment of distraction following the postponement of the Cardiff match, Mr Knighton did a delightful bellyflop on the rain sodden pitch at Brunton Park. The winner of the caption competition will be announced in the December issue and I'll buy them a drink in Jackson's at some point in the future.

New this month is the Carlisle United Chatroom, set up by Alastair Woodcock. To try and cater for fans all around the world and concentrate people into one time slot, it was decided to have a fixed session at 11:00 GMT so that fans in the USA and in the antipodes could participate at a "reasonable" local time for them. There was a test run on Sunday 25 October and it was very successful. Although only 5 people participated, the session lasted for the anticipated one hour and there will now be a regular session every Sunday at 11:00 GMT. See you there. EZ99, signing off!
