April 2000

The passing of Chris Balderstone was a sad moment for us all in March. There was a very good posting by Reid Gillespie to the Internet Mailing List.

Overall, we had a good run of results in March which saw us gain some state of comfort, but hopefully we will win the games in hand and be safe before the end of the season. The Chester match, however, will be a crunch tie.

The Michael Knighton Radio phone in was a good one, with Mr Knighton again showing his command in interview situations. As several people have said, he would make a great politician! I was slightly amused by his defence of the CUFC Website - "Over 50 pages". Hmm, I have over 600, Michael, and Alastair's CUFConline has quite a few too! He was entirely right in attacking personal abuse of himself and other members of the club. In particular, I do agree with some of his points about Cumbrian Newspapers. Together with Border TV and CFM they form a powerful media entity in Cumbria, and only have BBC TV and Radio as balancers.

The CISA is an interesting organisation. I have yet to make up my mind about them. Other than a bit of talking, some Q&A evenings and running a few buses, we have yet to see much from them. The buyout option is, frankly, a non-starter, I believe. I hope I am wrong, but I cannot see CUFC fans raising £2million. Again, I agree with Knighton and believe a "Trust" funded by Cumbrian Newspapers, CFM and Border TV, with help from other local businesses is the best option. We are seeing Media organisations investing in Soccer across the UK, and since these organisations make a lot of money from headlines about Carlisle United, they should put some of it back in to the Club. Think of a matchday programme produced by Cumbrian Newspapers? A Border TV 30 minute programme with interviews every week? Extended match highlights late Monday night? While their profits may not cover their investments straight away, the possibility is there. And it would make a change from them slagging the club off !-) Admittedly, rightly sometimes ;-)
