The relegation run in was a pretty traumatic one for players and fans alike. With a bad run of results dragging CUFC back into the fight after they seemed to have pulled clear, the scene was all set for a nerve jangling brace of Saturdays to end the season with.
First up for Carlisle was Darlington, a promotion contender. There was an air of dread and expectancy amongst the crowd, because if Carlisle won and Shrewsbury lost, then CUFC were safe from relegation. It was an exciting match, and with ten minutes to go CUFC were winning and both Chester and Shrewsbury were losing. But then CUFC conceded and that was how it finished. 1-1.
The final match against Brighton was a replay of last season, emotionally speaking, and at the end of it, we were labelled The Jammy Dodgers again...... The match itself was fairly poor, with most attention paid to news from elsewhere. Most CUFC fans, if they admitted it, felt our destiny was in the hands of others, not most of the players on the pitch. Too many times this season we have seen a CUFC team with no real interest in winning the game, and so it was on the last day of the season.
I will be there next season, cheering them on. You know it is the right thing to do. Who knows, maybe next season we will have a full squad of players who care for the club and a few thousand of the "stay away" fans.......
For anyone unfortunate enough to have spent any time in hospital, passing the time can be a problem. Hospital radio can help in this way and Carlisle has such a service in Radio Echo. A worthy organisation that could do with support. Also, you can make requests for people currently in hospital.
