November 2000

Fireworks

As we put Halloween behind us and move on to Guy Fawkes Night, some of us remember the explosive end to last season, which was actually more of a damp squib!! That was at Brighton and that is where we start our November campaign with a pitiful run of 1 point from a possible 33 behind us!!! We have again been lamenting poor officials at our games, but the simple fact is that if we were any good then we would be creating enough chances and goals to compensate for even the worst officials. This can be firmly blamed on Knighton, of course, but another orgnanisation may have to take some responsibility for his current hard-headed attitude.

The Cumbrian Newspaper Group has consistently attacked Knighton. While this may be seen to be legitimate, it has hardly helped Knighton take a fair minded attitude to Cumbrians. The Red Card campaign was ill-thought out. Let us not forget one simple thing: Cumbrian Newspapers are there to sell papers and Carlisle United is good Headline material. Perhaps this is why they were not interested in a rescue bid for the club. After all, hey can hardly slag themselves off, can they??

The rumours of an impending sale of the club by Knighton continue to circulate. In anticipation of this, fans are planning a new campaign along the lines of SOS 2000 - Kick-Off 2000. We are asking you to turn up to Brunton Park and join in with this 'Show of Support' for our new owners, to show them the potential of CARLISLE UNITED FOOTBALL CLUB and the sort of crowd they could see at Brunton Park if the team were to be successful again. WE want to show the new owners that WE DO CARE and WE DO SUPPORT OUR TEAM and are NOT willing to let CARLISLE UNITED FOOTBALL CLUB, OUR CLUB, end up in debt playing non-league football, BUT for CARLISLE UNITED to become SUCCESSFULL and a PROSPEROUS and WELL SUPPORTED football club.

We want you to come along and show your support. We would also like to ask fans to wear either a Carlisle United home shirt or a blue top to show their support for the blues. Once in the ground we want to create a good atmosphere by singing/chanting for the FULL 90 MINUTES of the game. We DON'T want any booing, we just want TOTAL SUPPORT for the players and the new owners.

The club is still asking for Cheerleaders. I think we BFBs at Brunton Park should all apply !-) Imagine the wonderful sight of a dozen men aged 30-50 decked out:

I spent an hour or so this month going through my early issues of RIOA and converting them to single page per month format and transferring other material to new RIOA sections. These include more amusing sports related quotes. New this month are a couple more Separated at Birth. Other than that, the IML match reports and RIOA teletext archive are up to date. However, for some real light relief, try reading the Darwin Awards 2000!
