December 2001

Tis the season to be jolly.......?

Well, all bets for a takeover are off, with even sources close to (and at) the club saying there will be no takeover. Roddy Collins is becoming disillusioned after seeing money coming into the club, but not going on new players. The team in familiar territory, adrift at the bottom of the division. No-one would begrudge any Carlisle fan being depressed. Many fans now believe that it is all over and that Conference football is our future, or even that Carlisle United will cease to exist. There is a very real risk that the current owners and directors may fold the club at the end of the current season if we are relegated. It all depends on the finances.....

It is very easy for people who go to watch CUFC to give up, but we know that miracles can happen. But why should we have to rely on miracles? The Knightons moan that money is coming out of their pockets, but plenty of it has gone into their pockets during their ownership. There is an old phrase. Speculate to accumulate. If they'd done that a couple of years ago.....

Even I, the eternal optimist, struggle to believe that we can survive this season. But we can, and for as long as we can mathematically survive, part of me will believe we will survive. And I'll be there to the season end, cheering the team on. But there are only two things that got me excited in the last couple of weeks. My girlfriend and my new car. CUFC have become an ordeal, to be honest. I still support them, though, and will continue to do so whilst they (or I) exist. But that is the problem, we may be seeing the extinction of another club. No CUFC would mean no team to support for me.

And so finally..... Saturday 1pm is the CCUIST March from the Sands car park to Brunton Park, followed by hopefully a large crowd cheering on CUFC. If you can make it, do so and make yourself heard.
