December 2003

Being a Carlisle United fan in a foreign land (Cambridgeshire) is not an easy thing, particularly having moved here at the start of our worst ever season! I suspect that this may be all my fault. I moved back to Cumbria in March 1990 and shortly after we saw the revival of Carlisle. Even in recent bad years, we somehow seemed to claw enough to stay up. However, in August this year I moved away from Cumbria and look what has happened. I am very, very sorry everyone :-(

The serious question now is what can be done, if anything? Do we try to stay up, or accept the inevitable and start planning now for being in the conference and get rid of all the players not pulling their weight? If we go down, do we stand any chance of coming back up? Should we get rid of Simpson and bring in a manager used to these dirty, bottom of the table, battles? These are weighty questions. Personally, I will never give up until it is mathematically certain that we are down. Having said that, an air of calm has descended upon me over the last couple of weeks. We have a soccer club, and that is the important thing. I have had a couple of opposition fans at work gently goading me over our current plight, but I'm not rising to it. Yes, if we are confirmed as relegated at some point this season, I will be upset. I may even be tearful! But life goes on, both on and off the pitch. If we go down, we will be back. Maybe not next year, maybe not the year after, but some year soon.
