Well, it has finally happened. We're down to Tier 5 (the Conference) after struggling at the bottom of Tier 4 for season after season. Clare and I were there that sad home game, but it was stirring that when the final whistle went, after a stunned second or two, the Brunton Park Maa'seeeve roared with pride and defiance to show that we will not go quietly into the night - we will survive.
The sad irony is that on our post Xmas performances we should be in the play-offs! Paul Simpson has done wonders since taking over, and we have a team to be scared of in Tier 5, if we can hold on to all of our players.
The question now is how long we will be in Tier 5, and whether the commitment is there to bring us back up. One thing I am sure of is that had we gone down under Knighton, that would have been the end of Carlisle United. As it is, I think we will be OK, and hopefully we'll spend no more than two seasons down in Tier 5.
