Well, it is amazing how a month can make such a difference! After our pre-season concerns, and a couple of jittery moments and poor performances, things do now seem to be turning around! A couple of signings, trialists and cup tie wins has lifted everyone on and off the pitch, and there is once more an air of optimism. Although Abbott remains an unconvincing communicator on the radio or in print, results will be what he is judged by. However, concerns have been aired about some of his substitutions, which cause dismay on a regular basis amongst Carlisle fans. New striker Richard Offiong started on the bench for the Orient match, the first that he was available for. I thought it is a smart move, as he'd not had much chance to train with the team and rewarded the players who did well against Bristol. It will make the starting ''strike force'' try to score to stay on the pitch. Yes, I know, professional footballers should always be trying, etc, etc, but psychology is a big factor and many on the messageboard are often quick enough to blame the manager and not the players for poor performances.
The big talking point going into September is our coming League Cup tie at home to Portsmouth. Our first foray into this round of the cup in 34 years, and we've drawn a Tier 1 team at home. On top of that, it is a Tier 1 team that is very beatable at the moment! By a quirk of fate, we also entertain their near neighbours Southampton on the following Saturday!
First up, though, is another cup game - away to Morecambe in the Big Beer Tray. This is a key match in some ways, in that it is a competitive match against a lower league team. We are expected to win, but a defeat could have a big impact on confidence amongst players and fans.
The weather has been pretty poor, though. My fortnight off was a bit of a washout, although I did manage to get a few things done outside. However, no barbeques in August at all, and it is looking doubtful for any in September, either!
