2000.03.04 - Lincoln City 5-0 Carlisle United

Lincoln City 5-0 Carlisle United

The relegation trapdoor to the Nationwide Conference edged a little more open, following this disastrous defeat at Sincil Bank. Carlisle's inability to defend balls into the box cost them dearly as a goal from Steve Holmes and a brace apiece for Richard Peacock and Gavin Gordon sunk the Blues without trace.

A first minute a long throw from Peacock was allowed to bounce in the Carlisle box and subsequently headed home by Holmes.

Worse was to follow on six minutes, when Carlisle failed to cover the gap left by Clarke's run upfield, allowing Peacock room on the right to cut inside and shoot across Van Der Kwaak into the bottom corner.

Carlisle slowly began to get back into the game and were unlucky not to get a penalty when Clarke was brought down in the box. Carlisle were now seeing more of the ball in midfield but the final pass was not good enough to break down a solid Lincoln back line. A cracking volley from McKinnon, well parried by Alan Marriott, was the nearest they came to a goal.

The second half started in similar style to the first, with Carlisle conceding twice in the first ten minutes. After 49 minutes, a mistake by Teale allowed the impressive Gordon to head the ball over him, before neatly slotting past Van Der Kwaak. Five minutes later Carlisle only partly cleared a corner straight to the unmarked Peacock who shot into the far corner.

Even the 73rd minute double substitution of Tracey and Anthony for Brightwell and Durnin failed to get Carlisle going after having their backs to the wall for most of the half.

On 83 minutes the final embarrassment, for the 200 Carlisle fans, was endured when Gavin Gordon rose unchallenged to force a header home at the near post.

The chants of "Wilkinson out" gathered momentum and it was easy to sympathise with their frustration.

5-0?! Lincoln city... and to top it off chester won. Thats also thrown away any goal difference advantage we had. Where have i seen a season close in this way before?...

Goal difference of nine so two more results like that and we're stuffed.  Whilst I have never agreed with any negative campaigns, surely the time has come to get Wilkinson out.  Even if it means Baker and/or Teale taking over, it has got to be better than that prat.  Putting Brightwell on as target man after last week's performance, putting Dobie in midfield, putting Tracey on for Brightwell when we're four down, keeping Searle on the bench (and Prokas, come to that), etc, etc.  The man is a gross incompetant - that's 144 times worse than an ordinary incompetant!  He has got to go.

Unless, of course, MK's sole aim is to take us to the Conference where
a) it'll be cheaper with part-time players and
b) it'll be revenge on all the barstewards who have made his life hell over the past three seasons (ie the fans!).
