Teletext Submissions - 1999/2000 Season

1999-08-05
With taunts of "Jammy Dodgers" fresh in our ears following the "Glass Miracle", our summer appointed coach Mr Mincher came, saw and, like a bit-player on a Paul Daniels' show, disappeared. He was replaced by our ex-Chief Scout, Martin Wilkinson, and Neil Cooper. With the pre-season friendlies over, we hope that our coaching staff can conjure a winning team out of a hat full of mis-directed rabbits.

Well, the fickle heart of a soccer fan was on display once more last Saturday! Stepping from one season to the next we were treated to a commanding display by the "All new and improved" Carlisle Utd and the fans forgot all feelings of woe and revelled in the moment. If we play like this for the rest of the season, we have nothing to worry about! If............

A good performance at Swansea was eclipsed by a goal unluckily deflected off Searle. It was a game dominated by two good goalkeepers, though. The mark of a good team is sometimes one which wins the games it shouldn't. So what does that make a team which loses the games it should win? Hopefully, just unlucky. There is every possibility that this squad can finish this season in a high position.

Star Wars - Division III - A New Hope A short, short time ago in a football ground not so far away a brave Kokni Knight strode forth to foil the Empire's plans to banish forth the United Blues to the history books. For his efforts the Emperor banished him to the outer realms. But now there is another young man who has stepped forward to take up the mantle. Luke Skyweaver may be the one to foil Emperor Darth Knighton.

Following the "games which shall not be mentioned" there was a partial recovery in the last two games with a hard won draw and then a spectacular win at home to Plymouth which was edge of the seat stuff, all the way. This was due in large to new arrivals Tommy Black and Paul Baker, and Soley and Tracey, although we were still looking vulnerable at the back too many times.

1999-09-09
After a glorious Bank Holiday Monday we had to settle for a justified 0-0 draw at Northampton. I still feel that we are vulnerable to attacks at the centre of our defence and that our midfield to attack links are weak. Still, I don't think I am alone in the belief that there are good things to be seen from this squad and that we should finish in the top half.

A rather dismal day was accompanied by a rather dismal game. Neither team had the skills on display to enthral the meagre attendance. For a change, a goalkeeper deservedly got the MotM award - a case of Luke Skyweaver truly using the force. The only goal of the game was the only real highlight, a beautifully struck shot from Tracey just inside the area, just before he was about to be subbed!

Over the last few years Internet access has provided football fans with a cheap medium for personal expression. Our fans are no different, offering many Internet based services : Chat room (Sundays and match days) Internet Mailing List and ICQ Websites (factual and fanzine) Which goes to prove that there is one thing sadder than a Carlisle United fan and that is a Blue on the Internet !-)

Everybody remembers the great football moments, but they also remember the bad and the farcical. Clive Allen trying to score from a Gentleman's back pass, Billy Barr's spectacular own goal and David Currie? Too many to mention! Michael (x2) Knighton on Football Focus brings a tear to many Blue eyes, as do the Wembley Finals, but for different reasons.

After the disappointing display on Saturday, Wilkinson lamented the booing by fans of the players and staff. Does he expect us to cheer a defeat?? The only good displays were from Andy Dibble and Richard Prokas. The recent goalkeeping crisis makes Chubby Brown's joke about CUFC fielding 11 goalkeepers this season seem almost prophetic, though !-(

Are the club missing the point? We are struggling. and there are players who don't seem to be trying. We need more players who give a damn about the club's future. We need to find, attract and keep good, local, players! Darren Edmondson came to support us after he was transferred. How many of the current squad would do that?

1999-10-28
Well - another week, another draw. Or should that be another weak draw? No, Halifax are a team doing well in the Division, so one point isn't a bad result. Looking forward to the FA Cup this weekend, Ilkeston turned down moving the match to Brunton Park. Apparently they think they can win it.........

1999-11-04
Wallpaper. That's all we were most of the time against Ilkeston and York. And both teams pasted us. It appears that the club are trying to paper over the obvious cracks in our team. It isn't working. On a more sombre note, the deaths of Jim Monkhouse and Alan Ross were marked with a minute's silence before the York game.

1999-11-11
Another week, another defeat. The game at Cheltenham was defined by a lack of a plan and poor defending. Tracey has been singled out by many fans for not putting in the effort over recent games. He seems far too willing to be tackled and far too unwilling to work for the ball. What all fans now want to see is a team playing for each other and the club, not just for their pay packet......

1999-11-18
Thank Kosh for Friday! We saw a team trying their hardest. The fans have recently been criticised for booing the players, but for once there was no need to boo them! Well, except Tracey. Now we need some of the "stay away until Knighton goes" fans to get out off their cosy houses and down to BP for the next few home games and really lift the players. The loyal fans have been going every week.....

The return of Weaver and some solid defending left Carlisle unlucky not to get something out of Rotherham match. It did, however, underline the need for new striking blood, a point confirmed by Cooper this week. All in all, though, the performances against recent top of the table opposition have been better. And remember SoS 2000. Forget excuses and get down to Brunton Park to cheer the team on against Chester City.

1999-12-09
A win, supplied by Pitts the Younger! A good solid performance by the team was praised by fans and Wilkinson alike and shows what can be achieved with the crowd behind a committed team. New signing Durnin put in a good debut. So again, I call on all those stay-away fans - remember SoS 2000, forget your excuses and get down to Brunton Park to cheer the team on against Chester City.

1999-12-06
With Neville Southall returning to BP in goal for Torquay, CUFC fans could be forgiven for thinking there would be another goal-fest for Carlisle. It was not to be. Positive things can be drawn from this 0-0 draw, though. Defensively, we were sound and the team reacted well to the positive encouragement from the crowd. What we need is for people to come back to BP, particularly for SoS 2000.

1999-12-23
My Blue love gave to me ..... 12 million pound on the lottery 11 ladies dancing (CUFC in early season) 10 out of 10 for effort from the team 9 points over the holiday period 8 goals against Barnet 7 thousand people at BP on 2000-01-03 6 points above relegation at year end 5 goalkeepers 4 more goals against Plymouth 3rd Wembley final 2 new strikers _signed_ 1 Mervyn Day ......!!!!!!!!!!

1999-12-30
SoS 2000 - Carlisle Utd v Chester City The day is upon us - the months of campaigning are over. Our New Year resolution is to get as many people as possible back to Brunton Park for this one match and give the team a real boost into 2000. So whatever reasons people have for not having been to games recently, forget them and come down on Monday!!!!

2000-01-06
Well, SoS 2000 can only be seen as a great success! An increased attendance and a win can't be bad! On the flipside, Neil Cooper parted company with CUFC leaving Wilkinson and Baker in charge of team affairs. Although we only got one win from the holiday period, all the games produced good performances and we were unlucky not to get more from the other games.

2000-01-13
Well, what can I say? This is beyond surreal, a good result with the crowd behind them would set most teams up for a recovery. But not this bunch. The thing is, we have good players, but where is the leadership? We need a good coach who can get the best out of our players. Cooper's gone, but what now?? Too often we seen things going badly on the pitch and coaches just sat on the bench doing nothing. We deserve better.

2000-01-20
Well, we have put together an unbeaten run.... oh no, that is simply because we haven't been playing! Water, fog - it's like a horror film, which is pretty apt considering our current position. Most fans seem even more depressed now than on the morning of 8 May 1999. Brunton Park has been reduced to the hard core fans. And they are not happy.

2000-01-27
A close game at Hartlepool resulted in another defeat for CUFC, but the fans at the game were encouraged by the performance. Midweek did not bode well, as we faced Wigan in the AWS. The team produced startling performances against a near full strength Wigan team to win. All at the game were agreed that they would happily trade this AWS win for three points on Saturday coming....

It has been rumoured that black vans have been seen at Brunton Park, being loaded with "stuff". Is Mr Knighton packing up and leaving? Or is there something more sinister going on?? Michael Knighton... black vans........ UFO sightings... black helicopters.... Strange....... Always look on the bright side of life.

2000-02-10
With the pitch heavily water-logged and no end in sight for this, perhaps the real reason for the East Stand - it is an Ark !!!! All those stay away fans are obviously non-believers and only true believers will be allowed to enter Valhalla along with our Norse warriors :-) Sorry, but let's face it, it is better than talking about the footy, isn't it? Please, please, let it get better....

2002-02-17
I have arrived at a shocking conclusion - the club must be deliberately adding additional water to the pitch to have games postponed in the hope that when we finally play those games we have a team good enough to win!!!! Think about it - postponed games, new signings, time to meld them into the squad - it all makes perfect sense!!!! Well, it does to me. Actually, lots of things only seem to make sense to me.

2002-02-24
Knighton is going nowhere until a buyer comes forward. Negative "Knighton out" chanting only demoralises the players. Unfortunately, at Rotherham there were occasional racist and constant anti-gay chants from a group of Carlisle fans. If there are any of them reading this, then you are sad, pathetic, brain-dead, little losers who need to grow up. On the plus side, the team looked a lot better, so support the TEAM.

Well, looking on the positive side, the team is trying, we have good enough players and we have 3 games in hand. On the negative side, we have to play those games, which means the possible fatigue, injuries and suspension. For the remaining games, the club must get the tactics right and the fans must get behind the team. That means getting down to the games and doing some supporting!!!

2000-03-23
A week is a long time in politics. Use the force, Luke. These were all phrases that sprang to my (twisted) mind during and after the Barnet and Peterborough games. And there was no negative chanting !-) Whilst things do look a bit rosier at the moment, we do have to play our games in hand, running the risk of fatigue, injury and suspensions. But the Glass is half full.......

2000-03-30
Although we've had a couple of hiccups, the outlook still isn't too bad. The fans are getting behind the team now, and without daggers, too !!! The players we have seem to be getting it right on the whole, and the team is taking on a settled air. We have a good "spine" now - Weaver, Teale, Prokas, Durnin/Halliday. I think a few more good results will help the cause.

2000-04-20
Once more unto the breach dear friends, once more! Ask not what your club can do for you, but what you can do for your club! Now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of their club. It ain't over 'til the fat lady sings. Cumbria, my lord, Cumbria. Cumbria, my lord, Cumbria. Cumbria, my lord, Cumbria. Oh Lord, Cumbria.......... And finally, as JFK said: "I am a doughnut!" We have to beat Exeter, be there!!!!!!!

2000-05-04
Well, here we are again. End of a year, and we are going into a match to fight against relegation. At least this year we are in a better position as far as the table is concerned, but do not doubt that it is still going to be tough. But, we are the Jammy Dodgers and with the crowd behind them and a good team performance we can do it again. Watch out for The Great Escape II on my website !-)

2000-05-11
A national brewery has this week warned pub customers not to gamble with pub staff in north Cumbria, labelling Carlisle as being home to the "luckiest bar stewards in the world". So, CUFC scraped through again. By goal difference. It just goes to show how important the SoS 2000 4-1 result over Chester City was. In Valen's name, let this not happen again next season.......
